Motherhood

By B.A. Paramadvaiti Swami http://www.vrindavan.org

Each one was born into this world to contribute to make others happy, believe me! Let us analyse it a little. First, when the baby is born, the mother takes it in her arms and presses it quite strongly to her heart. The baby feels very comfortable and safe in this position, close to the mother's heart. As soon as the baby cries, the mother comes running to put the baby again to her heart, and being close to the mother's heart, he receives milk from her breast. The baby feels completely safe. Like that begins life for each one of us, except for them who, according to their bad Karma, are put in the incubator. They are half traumatizised, have always a fear of being abandoned, and have a big problem because they did not have this refuge of the mother's heart. So, the mother knows that it is her duty to make her baby happy.

Later, when the baby grows, (everyone, intuitively, knows that we have to do good for the child) one takes him in one's arms and gives him a little present or a caress on the head. The mother, like the hero star, knows the best of her child, and when he is 30 years old, the mother still wants to do good for her child. Mothers with their children have won victories, as they always know how to conduct.

Humility in the Woman

Now I ask myself this: if a mother wants to make her child happy and the father too, why then would a mother do any harm to someone else's child? That makes no sense. If she wants to do the best for her child, then why maltreat another person, the child of another mother? It is not natural, therefore the mothers can feel the suffering of other mothers and therefore the woman's affectionate sentiments of motherhood, in the material world, are the noblest sentiments. If we want to adore any sentiment in the material world, it should always be the love of the mothers. In this sense the women have thousands of years of advantage before the men, but this does not mean that there are no women who have no bad thoughts at some moments, this is obviously possible. The woman's nature is that she represents the goodness of her heart. This goodness is the one from the Creator towards us. The mother has the faculty for maintaining the religious equilibrium in the family, and according to the Vedic Culture, the mother rules in the home, (of course there is no competition with the husband) it is not that she subjugate the spouse and control him and makes him feel bad, no, no, no, in no way. It is that the man in the Vedic Culture simply knows by intuition the themes of familiar love.

Women, as gender, have the big responsibility to maintain religiosity in the family, but when the woman is exploited, as nowadays, she is no longer seen like an important person in the nuclear family. She is only seen like an object to satisfy the senses, and this is due to the fact that there is a religious disequilibrium and the women do not know how to defend themselves against this. In the Vedic Culture it is said that the man and the woman complement each other perfectly, and that all relations between men and women that do not work on the basis of complementing, are not correct. In other words, the woman at home has her criterion, and the man on the road, when doing his work, has his criterion without forgetting his family, which is under the good protection of his wife.

So, in this way one can understand one sort of humility in the woman, as she embraces everyone and at the same time surrenders to the rest, and the humility of the husband is that he gives freedom to his wife to do the correct things. If you apply this to a government, we are all a family (because we are all big families; this family of a village, the family of an ashram and in the end - the family of a country). And because the whole country is a family, the wife of the president is called the First Lady. She should feel that all citizens are her children and she has to make sure that her husband, the president, does not maltreat anybody, because everybody is under her charge. She represents the motherhood to all the people.
